|GeothermSkin is a shallow energy wall system that can be applied to both new constructions and buildings undergoing refurbishment. This technology aims to use the earth-contact area of the retaining walls of the building basements to exchange heat with the ground.
The system is conceived as a piece of modular equipment, which consists in a hydraulic circuit made up of polymeric pipes fixed to the external surface of the retaining walls. A fluid circulates through them allowing for heat exchange with the ground. Modules can be linked in sequential or parallel combination to a main collector and pipes can be deployed both in the horizontal and in the vertical direction.
This technology was patented in 2019 (https://www.knowledge-share.eu/brevetto/geothermskin-moduli-per-muri-geotermici/) and its main advantages are the ease of installation, the low initial costs and the applicability to existing buildings undergoing energy retrofitting.
An experimental site is available at the Energy Center in Torino (Italy), where a section of underground retaining wall was equipped with three Geothermskin modules. The system also includes a heat pump and is integrated with solar collectors to test underground storage opportunities.
