|Demonstration Description||ENERTUN (Energy Tunnel Segmental Lining) technology consists in an improved tunnel precast segmental lining for tunnels constructed by TBM equipped to exchange heat with the ground in order to heat and cool adjacent buildings. |
A circuit of pipes is installed in each segment in the factory before precasting and a fluid circulates through them allowing for heat exchange with the ground. Each equipped segment is connected to the adjacent one through hydraulic connections to form a ring of segmental lining. The pipes are positioned so that their main direction is perpendicular to the tunnel axis. This system allows maximising the heat exchange and reducing the hydraulic head losses.
This technology was patented in 2016 (https://www.knowledge-share.eu/brevetto/enertun-conci-prefabbricati-per-geotermico/) and its main advantages are the high heat exchange, the low hydraulic head losses, the rapid installation and the low cost.
The system was installed in the tunnel of the Turin Metro Line 1, 40 m North from the Bengasi station. The experimental site is active with two rings of thermally activated segments, a heat pump and a secondary system for the usage of the heat recovered.
